Insight in cloud computing

In the age of digitization, more and more companies are relying on cloud computing. This migration causes changes in all business processes. In return, after the successful transformation, there are fewer operating expenses, you get the latest technologies and your secure systems improves. Find out about the many options. We have written an insight into the data world of the cloud for you.

What is cloud computing?

A cloud hostes computer resources such as data storage, servers or applications and shares them with several users. The data can be accessed via the Internet. The required storage space comes from the server architecture. The resources are protected by data mirroring, i.e. a copy of the data at other locations, in the event that a data center fails. From a functional point of view, it does not matter where this physical memory is located. Thanks to virtual links, they are available from any location.

Access to the cloud

Users access the data via devices (clients). All you need is a suitable device with a stable internet connection and the access data. A specific application or web service represents the gateway to the cloud through which users can verify themselves and gain access. The type and interface of this access differ with the various providers. There is no such thing as "one cloud", but rather several providers. They host storage space in physical data centers and use it to rent their services to end customers. Hosting means that the providers maintain their infrastructure. The maintenance of these server farms requires cooling, power supply and updating.

Various clients have decentralized access to data in the cloud.
Thanks to the cloud, the data is available anytime, anywhere.

The type of cloud

The cost of cloud computing varies depending on the architecture and service. Before making a decision, it is worthwhile to formulate your own requirements clearly.

Providers roughly differentiate between three cloud architectures:

Private Cloud

Contains only the data of a company and is hosted by its own data center or on servers from external providers. Access is either via the intranet or via a virtual private network (VPN). The applications are only made available to authorized users.

Public Cloud

Stores resources from multiple customers and is operated externally by a cloud provider. Access is via the Internet.

Hybrid Cloud

Mixture of private and public cloud. This variant combines the advantages of both cloud models in a common concept.

There is a cloud for every needs.

Cloud services

There are different categories of cloud services. Each is dedicated to different requirements and specifies how much room for maneuver there is in the cloud. Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service) and Paas (Platform as a Service) offer resources such as virtualized hardware components, servers, networks, operating systems or development environments.

In the Digital Workplace area with UC&C, we focus on SaaS and STaaS.

SaaS - Software as a Service

The providers make ready-to-use software tools available in the cloud. Users use the applications online and usually pay for the service as a subscription. This category includes the Google Workplace Suite, Microsoft Office 365, Slack, web-based email services, Zoom and many more tools. Due to their origin in the cloud, the programs benefit from a lively exchange of data and intelligent links. These are essential for the concepts of Unified Communications & Collaboration.

STaaS - Storage as a Service

The IT infrastructure that is rented here is storage space. Virtual hard drives for data storage are widespread, practical and more robust than physical storage media. They also make it easier for teams to work together, as members can access shared data directories. No matter when or where they work.

With SaaS and STaaS, the price is based on the number of functions, users or storage capacity that the buyer needs.

Between everything is possible up to ready-made software - the cloud services differ enormously.

Reasons for the cloud

In contrast to local resources (on premise), cloud computing offers some advantages.

  • cost cutting
The investment and maintenance costs for normal, physical data centers are eliminated.
You only pay for the service you need.

  • flexibility
You can react immediately if your needs change (e.g. expansion) and increase or decrease the performance.
Thanks to global access, your employees can access the data at any location.

  • productivity
Your IT team is no longer busy deploying and operating your local infrastructure and can focus on other strategic topics.

  • performance / data security
Global networking and competitive pressure are causing providers to equip their cloud solutions with the latest technology and the best possible speed.
This means that data security (cyber security) is constantly monitored and improved.

  • reliability
The cloud creates a mirror of your data, which serves as a backup an desaster recovery.

Cloud transformation with UC&C Projects

A transformation to the cloud is associated with challenges. With an expert at your side, these are easy to overcome. We at UC&C Projects are aware of our responsibility and know the pitfalls from years of experience. For this reason, we proceed in a structured and careful manner.

First of all, we will check with you whether your project is feasible. We analyze the requirements as well as the technical and organizational hurdles.

A well-developed strategy is essential before you decide on a provider and a solution. As a neutral partner, we are not tied to any brand or product. In this way we ensure that we give you the best possible advice based on your situation. Upon request, we will provide a cost comparison on premise versus cloud computing. Because despite the many advantages of the cloud, it is not always the cheaper option.

During the transformation, one of our employees accompanies the implementation as an external project manager or consultant.

Rely on shared expertise

In addition to our neutrality, we are characterized by our network. We are part of a network of experts who have a solution ready for every individual requirement and support us in the event of resource bottlenecks.

So we are - in the spirit of the cloud - always in exchange and therefore stronger together.
